Moving home can be one of the most stressful experiences that we go through, so just imagine what it feels like for your cat or dog. All that commotion in your current home and then being introduced to a completely different, alien environment; it must feel incredibly strange for them.
With this in mind, here are our top real estate tips for moving with pets.
Overnight bags
Your pets need them too! Include enough food, toys, grooming equipment and toileting kit to keep you ticking over for a couple of days; this will be a godsend to you when you’re going through the unpacking stage.
The Vets
Make sure you speak to your Vet to get a copy of any records to take with you to your new neighbourhood. Get enough medication to cover the transition too.
Shield them
It’s best to keep your pets firmly out of the way when you are going through the practical elements of moving. Leaving them with a friend or in a kennel is the best option, but if you can’t do this for whatever reason at the very least find a quiet room or other space where they can feel safe and reassured.
They will also feel reassured if you stick to routine as much as allows; walk them at the same time, feed them at the same time, etc. And when the time to move comes around, make sure they have enough food and water and plan in some stops if necessary.
Transport
It’s important that you use your own vehicle to transport your pets to your new home. That extra bit of familiarity goes an awfully long way when your pet is being introduced to a new environment.
Prepare a room
To ease the upheaval, get ahead of your pet in your new home and try to make a room or a corner/section of a room look and feel like your old home as much as possible; this small bit of familiarity will help to aid the transition for your pet.
Update their information
Tags and microchip information should be updated immediately; getting that new address and phone number sorted is important because the last thing that you want is to move into your new, dream home and find that you’ve lost your precious pet on the first day.
Talk about putting a dampener on what should be an extremely happy day!
